Aggregation of material regarding the construction and preservation of the Earl Shaffer Shelter, Peters Mountain, PA.
Earl Shaffer was a founding member of the S.A.T.C. and built and maintained the shelter as a member of the club. In subsequent years, the shelter was in the stretch of trail maintained by the club. The club also built the Peter Mountain Shelter as a replacement. When it came time to dismantle the Earl Shaffer Shelter as part of the preservation effort, about half of the people to show up for the ceremony and work trip were S.A.T.C. members. The club has been strongly behind the preservation effort.
The S.A.T.C. links below includes pages from the club bulletin that show Earl's involvement with the club.
1959 BulletinOther information on the S.A.T.C. site includes photos by Charlie Duane of the ceremony and worktrip, a video by Trail Angel Mary, a listing of newspaper articles about the event and a link to the broadcast by WHTM -- the ABC affiliate in Harrisburg, Pa. A reporter and camerman from the station walked the three miles in and out and taking turns carrying a heavy camera to film the segment. Considering that they knew little about the A.T. before that day, they did an exceptional job.
